Riverside | 29/04/10
Llanrumney United 0 Maindy Corries 3

Last game of the season, got there at last!!! Disappointingly played in the rain on an excellent pitch at Riverside. Maindy continued their recent good form and settled straight into their stride with some excellent passing football. After a number of good chances, Jay took the lead after a cross in was headed back across the goal by Jake and then headed home by Jay. More chances came and went, but the game remained 0-0 at half-time.

Things got more comfortable early in the second-half when Lewis sent a cracking half-volley rocket into the goal to make it 2-0. Following the goal, Maindy sat back a bit and Llanrumney had a number of good chances, which Maindy managed to keep out. Maindy made it three with a goal from short range from Jay. Brave goalkeeping kept the score at 3-0 till full-time. Another good performance from Maindy against a resilient Llanrumney side. Special mention to Jake for an outstanding performance this evening, he controlled the game with Joe G in midfield. Well done also to the boys as this result meant we have ended the season with our goal difference in positive territory!!

Maindy now have an excellent platform for next season. Overall the season has been frustrating, spending most of the season near the bottom, following a number of games where either we failed to shut out games and ended up drawing or losing close games. The performances at the end of the season have shown the true potential of the whole squad, the great team spirit, the trust in each other and the all round ability. There is a lot to look forward to next season. Well done everyone and thanks to Neil, Peter, Sean, Sean, Caroline, Glenys, Mandy, Keb, Phil and Liz and all the other parents for their support - makes it all a worthwhile pleasure.

Coed Glas | 24/04/10
Maindy Corries 2 Thornhill Athletic 1

A switch of venue from the well worn Pontcanna to Coed Glas made for a fabulous game of football. Thornhill came into the game unbeaten all season in all competitions and fresh from winning the Cup Final. Thornhill also needed just one point to secure the title. With that context, there was alot riding on this game.

The match panned out very similarly to the first fixture played out last month. Good football from both sides, good passing and plenty of goalmouth action. Thornhill exerted a lot of pressure early on, but were unable to make anything count. Then midway through the first half, a beautifully flighted free kick from Lewis dropped to Jay in the box and he made no mistake in dispatching the opening goal. More chances flowed for Thornhill, including hitting the crossbar and the post, but Tom was more than equal to every chance created by Thornhill.

In the second-half, the same pattern continued with Tom continuing his excellent form, despite taking a knock to his head. Then midway again through the half, and again from a free kick, Nathan steered the ball home to take the game to 2-0, ratcheting up the pressure on Thornhill. Thornhill continued to squander and be denied in equal measure until two minutes two go, when they benefited from some goalmouth confusion with two Maindy players down to get back to 2-1. After a brief fracas, Maindy held out for fantastic win.

As with Thursday, everyone made an important contribution and raised their game. Tom was imperious in goal, Paul as always was a rock in defence, sweeping up all the trouble, Ben was industrious, making tackles at the right time. Lewis again proved his value, through his excellent defending and constant threat from dead ball situations. Ibby was terrier like again, not letting anyone get past and make some important forays into the Thornhill half. In midfield, across the board Joe, Aaron A, Nathan, Hafasar, Jake (and Ross and Aaron Y) all held the game together, through tackling, passing, hard work, linking the play up and giving  100% commitment. The difference in having Jay back in the team was palpable - in the last two games he has been the difference in drawing and winning and it is great to see him back. In the end, it was that lack of strikeforce from Thornhill that was the difference in this game - they created plenty of chances, but were unable to make them tell.

All in all a great game, pleasure to watch. All the best to Thornhill, we have had an excellent rivalry over the years and given their performances over this season and the previous, they certainly deserve to at last lift the league title.

Heath Park | 22/04/10
Heath Park Rangers 2
Maindy Corries 3
Joe G, Jay x 2

Maindy finally managed to convert a close game into a victory, on a sunny evening at Heath Park. Maindy played their best football of the season to dominate the game, against a team we usually finish on the losing side to. At last all the passing came together, there was 100% commitment, the team worked together and played until the end of the game.

Maindy went a goal behind early on following a fabulous move by HPR, good passing, good movement and the goal was slotted home. Maindy, however were soon back in the game after Jay scored from an Aaron A through ball. Maindy, built up the pressure and spent extended periods in the HPR half, but went behind before half-time, when HPR broke and expertly lobbed the keeper.

After half-time, Maindy drew level, when a cross was headed home from Joe G. As the game drew to a conclusion, it didn't seem to be falling for the boys, until Jay seized the moment, and from outside of the box, dribbled through a couple of defenders and drilled it between the goalkeepers legs.

A well deserved win from Maindy, and all thirteen players on the evening should take great pride in the performance this evening. Well done all! Very difficult to single out anyone, but Aaron had a fab game after being out of the side for so long, came back and looked as though he had never been away, and Paul as always solid as a rock at the back.

Pontcanna | 18/04/10
Rhiwbina 1
Maindy Corries 1
Joe G

Another game, where Maindy have been unable to make the win. Maindy opened the game with promise and had a chance that went extremely close in the first half, but it was 0-0 at half-time. In the second-half, following the introduction of Jay (playing his first game since injuring his ankle), Maindy had more attacking edge. Maindy mounted attack after attack and were unable to get the opening goal. Eventually, Jay took the ball to the byline, and crossed, where Joe G managed to scoop it home. Inevitably, Rhiwbina, after offering nothing in the second half, went up the other end and scored with an unchallenged header off a corner. Also, inevitably, following the equalizer, the final whistle was blown early.

University Fields | 14/04/10
Pentwyn Blues 1
Maindy Corries 1
Hafasar

Fantastic pitch on a sunny evening. Maindy started in fantastic fashion with a goal in 30 seconds from Hafasar. Going down the left and smashing it across the goal into the far right. Maindy kept pressing and had several more chances until Pentwyn levelled the game after 20 minutes.

After half-time it was Pentwyn who pressed more creating a hatful of excellent chances. Maindy only managed a few attacks in the second half and looked to run out of steam. In the end just making it over the line for a draw.

Llanederyn High School | 10/04/10
Llanederyn Bulldogs 3
Maindy Corries 2
Nathan & Ibby

The return match within two days was played out on a lovely sunny morning . Llanederyn started off as they finished in the second half on Thursday, looking more alert and more up for it. They took advantage of this by taking the lead after 15 minutes, slotting home a rebounded shot from the keeper. Shortly after Maindy gave away a penalty, which was saved by Tom. The score remained at 1-0 till half-time.

Maindy came out with more promise in the second half, and drew level through Nathan. A good passing move finished off with a shot home. Within a minute Maindy took the lead through a cracking shot from Ibrahim - smashing the shot into the top left. This lead didn't last longer than ten minutes when Llanederyn headed in from a corner - they were queuing up to score. Shortly after, Maindy were on a promising attack when they lost the ball and Llanderyn sprung an attack which was excellently finished.

All in all another great game between two well matched teams. On reflection, Llanederyn deserved the win, Maindy weren't good enough for long enough and couldn't take control of the game. Ironically, although Maindy have only lost by more than two goals once, are locked in ninth place. With six games to go there is still work to do.

Pontcanna | 08/04/10
Maindy Corries 1 Llanederyn Bulldogs 1
Nathan

A real game of two halves on a sunny Thursday evening. Both teams started the game slowly, but Maindy were exerting more territorial advantage. This paid off after about 20 minutes when Nathan steered home the ball from just in side the box, through a crowded box. This score remained until half-time.

In the second half, Llanederyn pressurised the game more and had more of the chances. Kyle, standing in as goalkeeper, made a string of excellent saves to keep the game level, but in the end, a through ball was shot home to draw the game level. Llanederyn continued to pressure, but were unable to score a winner. In the end, probably a fair result for two well matched teams.
